Update - April 13 - The conficker worm is on the prowl. Activity
with this worm was reported from several sources as "picking up". The AP
newswire reported yesterday that the worm had infected more than 700 computers
at the University of Utah. CNET has reported that one of the goals of the
worm is to install trojans that spread a "fake" anti-spyware program similar to
that of the Anti-virus 2009 infection. The goal of the fake program is
identity theft. Users who register the software have their credit card
numbers forwarded to a server for collection. More information can be
obtained at the following sources:

Update - Well, the April 1 "phone home" deadline
has come and gone and nothing tangible has come of it. However, this does
not mean that this threat is gone. I recommend that you fortify your
machine against the problem.
According to a
report from Computerworld Security "1 out of every 25 infected PCs has been
hit with Conficker "

The conficker Worm/virus has spread and is now a serious threat. News is
spreading about a potential April first update to the machines already infected.
If you have not protected your machine you may want to do so. Although
infections have mostly occurred overseas there is a very real threat of those
infected machines spreading the infection further and with an estimated 10
million infected machines the threat is very real.
The conficker worm spreads through the autorun/play features of your system./p>
